Larry Riegel Takes KidleFest '08 Crown

MEARS, Mich. - Oct. 12, 2008 - The website is up and running again...finally. And not too soon as I'm pretty sure the in-laws were ready to take the grandkids hostage until KidleFest '08 results and recap were officially posted here. Well, it's now official. Larry Riegel topped Monkeyball vet, John Kidle, in the championship, 15-11.

(Commissioner's note: Kidle only lost once. Kidle won the winner's bracket and then lost the first game of the championship, but didn't realize a second game was necessary to determine the champion. Oh well, we'll let them battle it out at KidleFest '09.)

Three September MB Tournaments; Sylvia Wins First, Dameron Goes Back-To-Back

LANSING, Mich. - Sept. 27, 2008 - It's been a bit busy at he Monkeyball World Headquarters, so we're little behind on posting some tournament recaps. The Meadow Woods crew in Grand Ledge, Mich. hosted another Labor Day tournament, with Dave Sylvia winning his first title.

Down in Alabama, the SoMoCo ballers have been busy with tournaments on back-to-back weekends. Sean Dameron stayed hot on consecutive weekends, winning both the Pre-Salmon Throwdown and the Little Monkey Birthday Bash.

Brent Morrow & Pete Nemes Take Second Straight Glenwood Beach Doubles Title

BOYNE CITY, Mich. - Aug. 31, 2008 - The world's premier doubles Monkeyball tournament was once again held on the shores of Lake Charlevoix over Labor Day weekend (2007 results).   As always, Mother Nature provided beautiful scenery, but this year she also provided great weather! The 2007 finals were played in near darkness and 20-25 mph winds affected play in 2008. Ultimately the change of conditions didn't change the results though as Brent Morrow and Pete Nemes were champions of the Glenwood Beach Monkeyball Open for the 2nd year in a row.

Rich Rod Loses, A-Frush Wins

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Aug. 30, 2008 - With Michigan football playing Utah at 3:30, there was plenty of time for a sanctioned Saturday afternoon pre-game Monkeyball tournament. This wasn't just any tournament, however, as 5 of the top 20 players in the world gathered for the action. The Mormons Suck Invitational (obviously named in jest because of Big Blue's opponent that afternoon), nearly saw Dan Kidle knock off the Commish and #2 World Ranked Andy Frushour. In the end, though, Frushour, was able to fight through the loser's bracket and beat Kidle twice in the finals.

Dan Kidle Manages Wind, Wins At Sandhill

MEARS, Mich. - Aug. 24, 2008 - After a two-year hiatus, Monkeyball was back at the Sandhill Beach. And just like two years ago, Dan Kidle took home the Beach Invitational At Sandhill II gold, beating seven others and a stiff wind. It was Kidle's 5th career title and second of the summer.

MB4 Results, Recap & Photos Posted

LANSING, Mich. - Aug. 8, 2008 - It only took a week, but the recap, results PDF and photos from MB4 are now online. The World Rankings have also been updated, and to no one's surprise Dean Allen is still #1. If you have add photos or video you'd like to add to the site, just send them my way.

SoMoCo Wins Post-Worlds Team Match

MASON, Mich. - Aug. 2, 2008 - It should come as no surprise that Monkeyball was the featured attraction at the MB4 After Party hosted at Carp National (site of MB2). A Team Monkeyball match pitted six Monkeyballers from the Southern Monkeyball Conference against six ballers from Team Frushour. Team Monkeyball (first debuted at the Big House in 2006) is much like golf's Ryder Cup, with nine doubles matches and six singles matches determining the victor. Team Frushour was obviously physically and mentally drained (all six ballers had spectacular showings at MB4), while the six members of Team SoMoCo all had early exits from the World Championsips (some earlier than others). In the end, Team SoMoCo monkey-stomped their competitors from the north, 10 wins to 5.

Was there Ever a Doubt? Dean Allen Wins Third Consecutive World Championship

DIMONDALE, Mich. - Aug. 2, 2008 - For the third year in-a-row, Dean Allen took home the Golden Monkeyballs at the 2008 World Monkeyball Championships. Allen defeated Commissioner Andy Frushour in the championship match, after beating Worlds rookie Joe Guzowski in the semis. Frushour topped Kevin Gunns in the other semifinal before Gunns fell to Guzowski in the consolation match.

Coming later this week:

  • A full recap
  • PDF of results from nearly 300 games
  • Updated world rankings
  • Photos and video (and, yes, Gunns's naked ramp through the Old Orchard will be on Youtube shortly).

If you have additional photos or video to share, please send my way (afrushour@gmail.com).

Last Minute MB4 Competitor Information

LANSING, Mich. - July 28, 2008 - Here a few last-minute things to get you ready for the World Championships this weekend...

5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE COMING TO MB4

  1. DIRECTIONS/MAPS – The Old Orchard is about 4 miles south of 96, on the east side of M-99 (Michigan Rd). Look for the huge MB ladder – you can't miss it – just Click here for a Google Map.
  2. SCHEDULE – Players meeting is at 9:45 and games start at 10:00, but I'd get there early. The Old Orchard will open for practice at 8:30. Arrive at 9:00 to beat the traffic and the Monkeyball masses.
  3. LUNCH – You can bring your own lunch, or better yet, you can get pizza at the Old Orchard. About 40 pizzas will be delivered at noon. Buy a couple slices or the whole pie, whatever – just help me cover my $6 per pizza cost. I'll have plenty of plates and napkins (and beer, of course).
  4. PARKING – There is plenty of parking, and we'll have some folks guiding you to the right spot.
  5. CHAIRS & TENTS – Definitely bring lawn chairs/blankets. Many people will be bringing their canopy/tent, too. The weather report looks good for this weekend, and we hope to see a lot of sun. But remember, this is an Old Orchard – meaning there's no more trees and no more shade.

5 THINGS THAT CAN PREPARE YOU FOR MB4 COMPETITION

  1. MB4 PREVIEW – The commissioner's annual preview & predictions article will give you a scouting report on the top competitors at MB4.
  2. PAST REVIEWS – Or you can scout by reading what happened at last year's Worlds or in previous years (2006, 2005). You can also read recaps of every MB tournament to date.
  3. EXPECTATIONS – People often wonder what their Worlds expectations should be, or maybe they have delusional goals. The Expectation Generator will help you set some practical goals for your self.
  4. RULES – For those who have never played MB or just need a refresher, you can read the quick and simple rules or you can read the Official Tournament PDF Rulebook.
  5. UNOFFICIAL MATCH-UPS – An initial tournament bracket has been posted, but there will be a few minor changes before the weekend. Check it out to see who you play, and don't be afraid to go March Madness style and fill out your bracket before the event.

2008 Worlds Matchups Determined – Brackets Now Online

LANSING, Mich. - July 19, 2008 - The 2008 World Championship matchups are now set. You can expect a change or two over the next two weeks, but for the most part, the pairings listed in this PDF won't change much. 30-31 players have been placed in each of 4 groups. Each group plays single game matches in double-elimination format, until seven players are left standing. 28 players (7 players x 4 groups) make it to the afternoon where it's single elimination, best two-out-of-three. At the end of the day, one baller will take home the coveted MB4 Golden Monkeyballs.
