The 30 Is The New 20 Championships
Vis's House - Durham, NC
September 9, 2006
North Carolina's first ever sanctioned tournament was held in Josh
Vis's backyard, not too far from Duke University (yes, we did try to
sneak into Cameron to play a quick doubles game at center court - no
luck this time). A car-full of Hope College grads surprised
their buddy Josh for his 30th b-day, but more importantly they helped
him break into his fourth decade with an official tournament (and a
pint of peach schnapps).
Vis looked primed to make it past Pool Play, but a tough loss to longtime
pal Scott Engelsman kept him from advancing. Josh's better half,
however, did much better. Kim Vis breezed into the semifinals
by sweeping her first three games, but fell to Engelsman in the semis. On
the other side of the draw, the Andys (Dressler and Frushour) had a
high-scoring affair with Frushour prevailing in three games. The
championship featured the most recent 30-year-old (Engelsman) and the
next to reach 30 (Frush), with Engelsman taking the fast-paced match
and winning his first Monkeyball championship.
