LABOR DAY INVITATIONAL

The 1st annual Labor Day Invitational squared off 19 monkeyballers, making it the fourth largest tournament to date!  The Labor Day tournament was also the second this year played at Pennine Ridge Field.  It was a great day for Monkeyball that included (like all good tournaments should) grilled food, cold beverages and multi-colored balls flying around the yard and hanging off of three-tiered ladders.

The field consisted mostly of the Meadow Woods neighborhood: Tony and Maggie Olds, Dawn and Todd Byers, Chuck and Tina Giller, Chris and Marisol Smith, and Ben Gardener. Rookie ballers included Jim Shelley and Susan Beach, and Lisa and Mike Strobel. Avid monkeyballers Trent and Karen Maier, Josh and Liz Grant, and Harold Olds also participated.  And, of course, who could forget that Mr. Monkeyball was playing, Andy Frushour.

Second round games of note included Tony Olds losing 16-14 to rookie Mike Strobel and Andy Frushour losing 15-13 to rookie Lisa Strobel.  Even though this was Mike and Lisa's first official tournament, don't be fooled because they do own their own Monkeyball set!  The biggest story of the day comes from the exciting new rookie Chuck Giller who played his way into the finals without a loss.  There he played Andy Frushour who made it though the losers bracket by beating Josh Grant who basically threw the match because he wanted to go home.  In the final, Andy Frushour beat Chuck Giller 15-6, 15-0 to win the first annual Labor Day Invitational.  Andy received the beautiful trophy and a bottle of fine wine.
