2008 Glenwood Beach Monkeyball Open

The weather was the best yet as we enjoyed 80+ degree weather and constant sunshine. It was too hot, in fact, and we had to relocate two of the six courts that were in the sun to the shade. Can't have the ice in your drinks melt too fast!  

The format for teams is random draw, with the exception of the reigning champs (Brent Morrow and Pete Nemes) which were kept in tact. Fifty competitors of all ages and experience levels came out on Sunday, August 31st, to represent Northern Michigan Monkeyball. The most exciting match of the day had to be on the main court in the Winner's Bracket Finals that pitted Team #1 (Brent Morrow & Pete Nemes) and Team #25 (Dan Nemes & Vasco). Both teams had cruised through everyone they faced and early it looked like Dan and Vasco were going to continue to cruise through the defending champs as they jumped out to a very quick 13-0 lead. Pete answered that with an 8-point round which was quickly answered again with a 7-point round by Brent and they had overcome that deficit in two turns.  

The loss sent Team #25 to the loser's bracket final where they took on Dan's wife in Team #22 (Ann Nemes & Kyle Dart). Dan and Vasco triumphed and we were set for a rematch of Teams #1 and #25 in the championship match. Brent and Pete were once again victorious in this match taking home the $50 cash prize and getting to once again hoist the best looking trophy in Monkeyball.  

There were cries to break up this potential dynasty but cooler heads prevailed and the team will once again be together for next year's tourney. A special thanks and happy birthday to Mistress of Ceremonies, Jennifer Morrow, who took charge of coordinating matches, courts and updating brackets all while she was 8 ½ months pregnant! Additional thanks to Dan and Ann Nemes for opening their yard and home for the event and to everyone on Glenwood Beach who helped make this once again such a great event. Next year on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend this tournament will be held in Boyne City on Lake Charlevoix! We'd love to see even more participants next year!
