MONKEYBALL TAILGATE
Prescott Field -- East Lansing, MI
October 18, 2009

By Dan Renner

Game time was set for 9:30am. #8 Dan Renner, #13 Tony Fuller, #15 Andi Osters, #18 Andrew Alexander and the "hostess with the mostest" Julie Renner arrived on time with #20 Keith Hagen arriving shortly after. With only six players we decided to do a round robin for seeding. I don't remember much of who beat who but with less than an hour of playing Matt Haynick, Dan Oberlin, Jessica Oberlin, and the Newman fam arrived. Our field of 11 was set with Osters drawing the brackets. Renner, Osters, Fuller and Alexander drew byes. Between keeping the fire stoked, the baby happy and the honey-do's, I really missed a lot of the action. Big matches included Alexander over Hagen for his only win of the day. Jon Newman providing the KO of Alexander.

By having five top 20 players for a backyard sized tournament, everyone knew there would be blood shed. MB3 final four phenom Andrew Alexander 1-2 on the day. MB5 rookie sensation Keith Hagen 2-2 on the day.

Renner cruised to the championship until meeting Osters. Osters turned possessed after losing game one to Fuller in the losers bracket finals 11-15. Facing elimination she beat Fuller 15-4. In the best of three final, back against the wall, trailing 13-14 Osters beat Fuller 16-14 to advance.

In the championship, Osters was like a hot knife through butter only faltering briefly after already winning three straight. Osters went from one game away from elimination to winning 6 of 7 matches to take home the coveted blue balls trophy. Congratulations Andi, I'm putting your championship win right up there with the 2004 Red Sox who were down three games to none to the Yankees only to go on and win four straight advancing Boston to the World Series where they then swept the Cards.

Fast forward to Memorial Day, Monday May 31, 2010 for the next event at Prescott Field. Time TBA. See you then.

POSTGAME RECAP

I'm not sure who's idea it was to play in the afternoon. But after I lost the blue balls in the morning I was devastated and took to the bottle. Other than what the bracket tells you things just ran together. I do remember a great showing from Mel Newman, getting sent to the losers bracket by Matt Haynick and somehow making it to the championship game where Fuller won his third crown at Prescott Field. I've hosted four tournaments and have finished as brides maid for each. The great Renner v Fuller debate continues.
